Trainer Trends for March By Ricky Taylor

In the jump race season the month of March is a make or break month for trainers. The month hosts the Cheltenham festival, which is the high point of the whole season. This is the meeting when winners really count and the big stables will aim their best horses at this one four-day meet. However, the festival is just four of 31 days in the month and for followers of monthly trainer trends it is the performance of a trainer over the whole month that really counts.

For the benefit of new readers I’ll just spend a few lines restating the methodology behind my monthly trainer trends. In order to produce meaningful results I’ve only considered the results from recent jump race seasons. Furthermore, I’ve excluded those trainers that had fewer than four winners in the month in question, and had fewer than 30 runners.

In Table 1 I’ve presented my results. The Table is ordered by the rate of return (Profit/Loss %).

The trainers G A Charlton, Mrs S J Smith, Andrew Turnell, P Monteith, D McCain Jnr, H D Daly, T R George, Jim Best, O Sherwood, W P Mullins, C Grant, Mrs A M Thorpe, Ferdy Murphy and T J Taaffe are the select few that make a profit.

For regular readers of this column the performance of Nicky Henderson has been key to making a profit in a number of months this season. However, as I reported in a previous article, he does tend to go off the boil towards the spring. This is backed up by the data from the last couple of seasons that show that Henderson does particularly poorly during the month of March. For once he looks like the trainer to avoid.
