We now have a number of ways that we can rate class. Some are more effective than others, but they are all important in allowing us to analyse these races. Is it possible to put a rating on class? Yes, but there are a number of obstacles to overcome and we still haven’t finished, although we are more than half the way there. We also have to bear in mind that ‘Days Since Last Raced’ for each horse will be different, and there will be different periods of time past for each horse since they raced in a similar race to the one that we are assessing. How important was a rating that was made yesterday, to a rating that was made 365 days ago? This is an extreme example but you get the idea. There is not enough space in this article to discuss this, but I call it time decay and using it can add significant value to your ratings.
