The final figure measures the class or ‘Earnings Class’ as I like to call it. This can be taken even further, done in a number of ways, and compared with each other. When a certain figure occurs, then this is a sign of good or bad class in the race. I have even seen people use simple figures such as the number of wins times 5000, number of places times 2000, and the average earnings for each race. These are added together to create the rating. Some of these are good and some are not as good, but they are all measuring the same thing. What is important to acknowledge is that they are indeed all measuring the same thing – but in different ways. If we measure the same thing in different ways then there will be a lot of overlapping, or correlation, which in statistical terms is not considered a good thing, but there will also be very slightly different information in each rating, and the slight variances may be all that we need to make a profit on a race.
