The new Barclays Premier League season kicks off with the Saturday lunch-time match between Tottenham and big spending Manchester City and already there has been a change of team Manager with Martin O’Neill leaving Aston Villa. As ever the rumour mill over who will succeed him is rife with speculation and so far over £80k has been matched on Betfair with the current USA coach Bob Bradley heading the market @ around 2/1, followed as clear second favourite Sven Goran Eriksson. There have been a lack of clear statements regarding O’Neills departure but the Clubs owner Randy Lerner was quoted as saying that he no longer “shared a common view” with departed manager on how to take the club forward. In the meantime caretaker boss Kevin MacDonald will face the media for the first time today ahead of Saturday’s opening Premier League clash with visiting West Ham.
Other significant news that is very likely to affect the focus of the squads involved is the ownership battle for Liverpool which has been going on for several weeks with the club inviting offers for Tom Hicks and George Gillett’s stake. Liverpools opening fixture is a key home match against Arsenal who also have their own challenges and will start the new Barclays Premier League season with the same old injury problems. Arsene Wenger will leave it as late as possible to decide whether World Cup final duo Cesc Fabregas and Robin van Persie are fit enough to feature at Anfield. However, the Gunners are already without centre-half Johan Djourou (hamstring) and striker Nicklas Bendtner (groin). Midfielder Alex Song (calf) is doubtful while Denilson (abdominal) and Abou Diaby (calf) face fitness tests.
